Career re-think

I had a post all ready for you loverly people to read, but instead I have to deal with some bad news.

I usually don’t like to add to the world of bad news that people deal with everyday, in the news or their own lives.  But today I have to burden you.

I got an email today that saddened me.

I had applied for a job and had gotten part way through the interview process, having 19 interviews in total.

I charmed them with my wit.  I told them I’m good at hiding things like paper trails.  I said that I have no real idea of how to deal with large amounts of money.  I was honest, to a point.  I even said that I wouldn’t take a bonus and would have a salary of only €75,000 a year.  After taxes and expenses (that I would cover myself) this would still give me a comfortable, very comfortable way of life.

All was going well.

Then the email came:

“Sorry, we’ve gone in another direction.  We’re hiring someone else.  He’s not as charmingly funny as you.  As for paper trails, he mentioned something about “plausible deniability” which sounded very impressive indeed.  He’s never dealt with huge amounts of money, just numbers on computer screens and expensive reports, but that’s the same right?

You nearly had us with the salary you proposed should you be successful, but when he said that he’d need €500,000.  We’re not bankers, we’re in HR so we figured that was a better figure.  I mean no one would suggest having to earn that much unless there was a great reason for it, right?

Anyway, sorry to inform you that you didn’t make it on this occasion but we’ll keep your CV on file should a suitable position arise for you in the future.”

So close…..
